On December 11th, 2008, Mixed Unity re-united to continue their initiative to put a halt to the violence in the community. The youth agreed to hold the concert on March 7th.

In response to recent violence, 30 youths, representing numerous organizations in the Silver Spring area gathered recently to begin an initiative to put an end to the ongoing violence in the area.

Second Chances Video Project

This summer Gandhi Brigade is teaming up with Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers to produce a summer video that explores the challenges faced by young people who have an arrest record. The project, called Second Chances, seeks to portray the challenges of adjudicated youth from their own point of view.

Silver Spring Youth Media Syndicate

The Gandhi Brigade teamed up with School Girls United and Einstein EMAL to cover the educational conference at Silver Docs. Under the flag of the Silver Spring Youth Media Syndicate documented seven hours of presentations on how media production can be an invaluable tool for educators. Thirteen young journalists interviewed 13 presenters and participants and turned the interviews into just-in-time web videos.

A Farewell to Turf

On July 25th the Regional Services Center hosted "A Sign of the Times" party to say goodbye to the turf and focus hope on the new Town Center which will be built on the site. Gandhi Brigade youth capured the final farewells on tape and in "The Book of Turf." You can visit the "Book of Turf" yourself and add your own comments.

And the Winner is....


Einstein EMAL is the hands down winner of the Express Yourself Three-Hour Video Contest for their nouveau Western starring Sammy the Unsuccessful Clown. The one minute and 26 second short was conceived, shot, and edited in just three hours at the Gandhi Brigade Youth Media Festival on May 10.

Manuel Peña was the director of the Einstein High School team along with the talented Anielka Cruz and Omar Cristo. Pictured right is Ellen Daniels, Einstein ESOL teacher and founder of the EMAL program that uses video as a technique for teaching English.

Three Hour Video Contest


School Girls Unite

Four teams competed in the Three Hour Video Contest: Einstein EMAL, School Girls Unite, The Goonies, and Gandhi Brigade. They each received an envelope that gave them a genre, a character, and a line. They had just three hours to plan, shoot, and edit a three minute video. The results are pretty clever.
